We are sharing three design concepts for the Redesign of Chinatown Memorial Square. Three design concepts were created and shaped by what we have heard from the community, interest holders, and people from across Vancouver. Your feedback on the three design concepts will help us develop a final design concept.

In previous engagements, you shared these priorities:

• Improve Chinatown Memorial Square as a special place that celebrates Chinatown’s rich culture and living traditions.
• Highlight significant moments in the community’s history and its resilience and strength.
• Make the Square a flexible, safe, and welcoming pace for all people to connect and celebrate.
• Provide a mix of fixed and movable seating, trees for shade, lighting, and improved maintenance.
• Develop a long-term plan for taking care of the space.

Your feedback will help shape the final design concept, which will be shared with the public in Autumn 2025.

Share your thoughts on the proposed designs by:

• Review the three design concepts (PDF, 14 MB)
• Take the survey by Wednesday, April 30
• Attend an open house at the Chinatown Memorial Square Plaza (135 Keefer St at Columbia St, Vancouver, BC)

Staff will review and summarize feedback received and share an engagement summary in the coming weeks. Your feedback, combined with other inputs, will be used to create a final design concept which will be shared with the public in Autumn 2025.

In our second phase of public engagement, we heard from members of the community, people across the city, and stakeholder groups on the draft vision, principles and goals for Memorial Square, along with ideas for possibly increasing the size of the space.

Phase 2 Public Engagement Highlights

Our next phase of engagement will present design options for the square that will be developed with the input we received during the first two phases. Stay tuned for updates through this webpage or by signing up for our email list.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our most recent phase of engagement where we heard from you on the draft vision and goals for the project along with some ideas on redesigning and possibly increasing the size of the space.

We will be sharing the engagement summary on what we heard during Phase 2 later this year by posting it on this website and distributing the link through our networks.

We are now in the process of retaining a design consultant who will use feedback we have received to work on conceptual design options for the square. We will be presenting these options for your feedback when they’re ready.

We have extended the deadline to complete our survey on the redesign of Chinatown Memorial Square to December 13, 2021. If you haven’t filled in the survey yet, please complete it today!

We want to hear your ideas for redesigning Chinatown Memorial Square and follow up on what we heard from you in Phase 1 of the public engagement.

Phase 2 Public Engagement - Exploration

After reviewing your feedback (see Phase 1 Public Engagement Summary Report), we have drafted a vision and set of principles and goals for the project. We're also sharing some ideas and seeking feedback on increasing the size of the square.

Between May 19 and June 16, 2021, we received a total of 385 survey responses in English and Traditional Chinese through the Shape Your City websites. We have reviewed the survey responses which will inform the redesign of Memorial Square.
