We want to hear your ideas for redesigning Chinatown Memorial Square and follow up on what we have heard from you in Phase 1 of the public engagement.

Phase 2 of Public Engagement - Exploration

After reviewing your feedback (see Public Engagement Phase 1 Summary Report), we have drafted a vision and set of principles and goals for the project, and would like to share this with you (see them in our presentation). We are also sharing some ideas and seeking feedback on increasing the size of the space.

Your responses will help guide the redesign process and consultant when developing the design options.

Background

Chinatown Memorial Square is located in the heart of Vancouver's Chinatown at the corner of Keefer Street and Columbia Street. This valued public space hosts important community events such as the Remembrance Day ceremony, and draws many visitors to the neighbourhood where they can learn about the contributions of Chinese people in Canada. It also provides a space for community members to honour their culture and traditions.

This project is an important part of Chinatown's living heritage. We want to improve Chinatown Memorial Square as an accessible public space while developing a design that enhances its culture and history.

    Thank you for your participation in our Phase 1 Public Engagement!

    We wrapped up Phase 1 of the public engagement in summer 2021, when we listened and learned about what is important to you in this project. Check our Phase 1 of Community Engagement Summary!

    Between May 19 and June 16, 2021, we received a total of 385 survey responses in English and Traditional Chinese through the Shape Your City websites. We have reviewed the survey responses which will inform the redesign of Memorial Square.
