Bute Greenway - A shore-to-shore connection

Help us build a shore-to-shore connection

We are exploring ideas to improve and prioritize Bute Street for:

  • Walking, biking, and rolling for people of all ages and abilities
  • Providing a variety of public spaces to play, rest, relax, socialize, enjoy food or drink, or host community events

As part of this project, we will also advance a potential design for a permanent Bute-Robson plaza.

Phase 1 Public Engagement: Project Goals and Big Ideas

In late 2021, we conducted the first phase of engagement to introduce the Bute Greenway Project. We asked people about the draft project goals, how Bute St is used today, and about their hopes and ideas for a future greenway on Bute St. We also presented a conceptual design for a permanent Bute-Robson plaza. Since Phase 1 public engagement concluded in December 2021, we have reviewed the survey responses and Big Ideas as well as feedback received via email. We heard positive feedback on the future of that plaza space and the potential expansion of public space improvements at the Robson St intersection.

What are we doing with the feedback?

We have reviewed the Phase 1 feedback and are preparing different design approaches for how a future greenway on Bute St might take shape. We're also exploring options for public space improvements on the Bute Greenway at Robson St.

What's happening next?

Phase 2 will allow us to test different ideas and determine design priorities ahead of presenting a preferred design option for the greenway in Phase 3.

With that in mind, throughout summer 2022, we are hosting discussions with partners, working towards a potential design for a permanent Bute-Robson Plaza and exploring options for public space improvements on Bute St near Robson St.

Once this design phase has concluded, we expect to launch Phase 2 public engagement in late 2022.

In the second phase we will:

  • Share refined project goals
  • Review design options for delivering the greenway, showing how we can achieve the goals and the trade-offs associated with different approaches.
  • Present the Bute Greenway in different 'segments' from shore-to-shore
  • Show a permanent Bute-Robson Plaza design, taking it from conceptual to proposed design.
