What is UNDRIP?
The United Nations Declaration on Indigenous Peoples' Rights (UNDRIP) is an international declaration containing an agreement among governments on how Indigenous peoples should be treated.
It also sets out how governments should respect the human rights of Indigenous peoples. It is also an important guide for the proper implementation (or fulfilment) of other human rights agreements or conventions affecting Indigenous peoples.
UNDRIP consists of 46 articles that describe specific rights and actions that governments must take to protect these rights. All the articles are very important, linked to each other and form a frame for governments to make sure that the rights of Indigenous peoples are protected.
How was the City's UNDRIP Strategy created?
The UNDRIP Strategy was produced by a task force created last year by Vancouver City Council in partnership with leadership of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations to develop recommendations for the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
