Notification
The City of Vancouver wants your feedback on public space and street upgrades at the future Broadway Subway Station sites. As part of the subway construction, the station blocks are being redesigned to accommodate subway infrastructure, including ventilation grilles and emergency exits.
The Broadway Subway will change how people move to and from the Broadway corridor by extending the Millennium Line SkyTrain to Arbutus Street. We have an opportunity to reimagine Broadway as a Great Street by reallocating space towards improved public space. This provides opportunities to improve the experience of walking and rolling on the street, while accommodating necessary station vents and exits, and the large number of people expected to use the subway stations.
How you can get involved
There are several ways you can provide feedback on the street design in the coming weeks:
- Visit shapeyourcity.ca/broadway-station-block to read the information boards and take the survey from May 18 to June 15, 2021.
- Contact City staff to provide your comments or ask a question

Background
In 2019, Council endorsed the Broadway Plan Guiding Principles, which were informed by what we heard from the community about their hopes for the area. The principles highlight the desire to enhance Broadway as a Great Street. A Great Street would have wider sidewalks to accommodate the increased volumes of people who will walk, roll, and spend time on Broadway with the new Broadway Subway and future growth in the area. We’ve also heard strong interest through the Broadway Planning process to prioritize the accessibility, enjoyment and walkability of Broadway. Additional street trees and improved public space will improve the experience for everyone spending time on Broadway.
Design approach
The conversion of Broadway to a Great Street will be achieved incrementally over the long term, in coordination with utility upgrades, development, and other construction works. However, on the city blocks where the stations are located, the street will need to be rebuilt within the next few years to accommodate critical subway infrastructure. The current redesign work will:
- Coordinate the placement of ventilation grilles and other critical subway infrastructure
- Provide accessible public space and enhanced public realm
- Better accommodate the large number of people accessing the transit stations
- Minimize impacts on existing buildings and entrances
- Improve access to businesses during and after construction.
We hope to hear from you on the redesign of these spaces. Your feedback will help shape the future of Broadway.
Sincerely,
