Partnering with the local business community, we’re creating designated public spaces for responsible alcohol consumption to help businesses reopen and give residents more public space to reconnect with friends, families, and loved ones.

Much like how other public spaces give people space to eat, rest, and enjoy the weather, these designated “pilot” spaces will allow one additional use: enjoying alcoholic beverages outdoors. This pilot is temporary and runs from August 10 to October 12, 2020. We are approaching this program with curiosity, care, and an openness to learning.

Remember to follow site rules and hours, be respectful and responsible, and share the space with others (at appropriate distances). Otherwise, bring your own beer, wine, and spirits, enjoy your take-out from local businesses, and use this as an opportunity to socialize!

The designated sites and hours for public alcohol consumption are:

  • šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl'e7énk Square (Vancouver Art Gallery – North Plaza) from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM
  • Lot 19 (Hornby St and W. Hastings St) from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
  • Bute-Robson Plaza, from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
  • 17th & Cambie Temporary Plaza, from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM

(Check out the photo gallery for site maps.)

City staff are working with community partners, your local police, and the regional health authority to make sure spaces are safe, properly managed, and well-maintained.

To continue improving the spaces, we also need your help. Please take a moment to provide feedback in the survey below. Inputs collected from your survey will help us better manage the spaces day-to-day, as well as give us ideas for future public space projects.
