Portside Greenway Survey: Wall Street Segment

This survey focuses on the Portside Greenway’s Wall Street segment between Powell Street and the Commissioner Overpass.

Portside Greenway: Wall Street Segment

Public engagement in phase 1 identified safety and comfort issues along this segment due to high vehicle volumes and fast vehicle speeds and the two kilometres of missing sidewalks along Wall Street.

We follow Vancouver’s All Ages and Abilities (AAA) guidelines to design greenways. Two greenway design options have been developed for the Wall Street section that meet AAA guidelines. Both options will also improve accessibility for people walking, or using mobility devices by:

  • Adding and fixing sidewalks
  • Planting street trees
  • Adding more street lighting
  • Providing seating
  • Adding green rainwater infrastructure (like rain gardens, planting, and tree trenches)


There are two design approach options for Wall Street:

  • Car-Light Street: A quiet shared street with parking on one or both sides, and space for wide sidewalks and new street trees. Road closures and traffic diversions lower vehicle volumes and speeds, so people cycling, and vehicles can share the road.  Vehicle access will change; however, all driveways will remain accessible by vehicle.
  • Protected Bike Lane: Protected bike lane with two-way vehicle traffic and parking on one side for most blocks. Vehicle access will remain as it is today. There is limited space for sidewalk widening and street trees.

Each option responds to community priorities differently and balances trade-offs between how road space is used. 

We want to hear your thoughts on both options and your opinions on the trade-offs proposed. Your feedback will help us develop a recommended design that will be shared with the community in 2025.
