What is this initiative?

Pop-up plazas and linear pop-up plazas are among the many initiatives the City is taking to help residents and businesses adapt to living and operating through a pandemic. Each plaza is created with safety and accessibility as a priority.

    What are pop-up plazas?

Pop-up plazas are temporary neighbourhood public spaces on side streets. They support safe physical distancing, access to local businesses, eating, small-scale gathering, resting, walking and cycling, and other activities.

Pop-up plazas also include rain-friendly plazas and linear plazas.

    What are rain-friendly plazas?

Rain-friendly plazas use the overhead protection offered by bridges to create rain-friendly outdoor spaces that support physical distancing. They feature picnic tables, signage and ping pong tables (at the Cambie Bridge North and South #2 locations only). Bring your own ping pong paddles and balls!

What are the benefits of these plazas?

Pop-up plazas transform streets to create public space for walking and cycling, seating, and other activities, so people can do the things they need and like to do, while also practising physical distancing.

    Why are we proposing this?

We are committed to supporting Vancouver’s recovery from the COVID-19 crisis through initiatives that focus on the recovery of our local communities, businesses and non-profits.

    When is this happening?

On June 12, we installed our first pop-up plaza at E 27th Ave and Fraser St. We installed four additional plazas on June 22. We will be installing more in the coming weeks.

Who will take care of these spaces?

We continue to work with residents, partner businesses and other organizations to make sure that the spaces are maintained, inclusive and comfortable. Our pop-up plaza partners manage street furniture, cleanliness and activities at the plazas, and work with the City on ongoing maintenance and improvements to the spaces.

    How can I provide feedback?

We want your feedback on pop-up plazas throughout the city. Ongoing monitoring, along with public feedback and guidance from the Provincial Health Officer, will help us improve these spaces over time. In addition, it will help us to determine whether any of these temporary plazas should remain in place after the recovery period.
