Consultation has concluded
The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is planning a new half-block urban park for the Mount Pleasant community at the intersection of Main Street and 7th Avenue. This new urban park sits at the gateway to Mount Pleasant, one of Vancouver’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, and its design will strive to reflect the needs of the area. There are a number of existing parks nearby that allow different activities, like playgrounds and sports courts, and with events like Mural Festival and Car Free Day growing every year we hope the new park can be a flexible staging place for community events and all-season programming.
What's happening?
The Park Board Commissioners unanimously approved the revised concept on May 29, 2023. We are now developing construction drawings based on the approved concept, construction is anticipated to begin early 2024.
This report summarizes the feedback we received on the proposed concept during the second round of engagement in November/December 2022. Please see the Phase 2 Engagement Bookletfor the concept design and more information.
The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation acknowledges, with respect, that our parks are located on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples.

When the first round of public engagement is complete, we will compile the data and produce a synopsis on our project website for everyone to see. With this data, we will begin creating some early designs for the park, ready for public review in spring 2021.
This park site was outlined during the Mount Pleasant Community Plan development and you can find specific details around that plan upon the project website.

Hello,
You can join our mailing list for Main & 7th Park by going to Vancouver.ca/main-7th-park. That webpage will provide regular updates right through until the project is built and about to open to the public.
If you fill out the 'Get Updates' box towards the bottom of the page, we will be sure to contact you when there are key project milestones for you to get involved in.

Not a question, but the area desperately needs a designated dog park! It would be awesome if the dog park also had a small covered area for owners. Dog parks provide in my opinion the greatest opportunity for social interaction with my fellow neighbours and decreases social isolation. I believe a dog park could help alleiviate Vancouver's reputation as being the "unfriendly city".

Thank you for submitting your response. There is an increasing demand for dog off-leash areas within our city and the park Board is working toward improving our standards across the city. The People, Parks and Dogs Strategy (2017) looked at how we can improve Dog Off-Leash Areas (DOLA) across Vancouver, in response to growing demand.
Within this document, on page 29, it notes that to minimize conflict with adjacent land uses, such as against busy roads like Main street and Kingsway, there should be a buffer of 50-75m.
As such, the Main & 7th Park site does not meet our standards and cannot meet the requirements to accommodate a DOLA.

An extra park is always welcome, and I dog park is a good idea as well for this area. But I think we also need a swimming pool in this area, we have the community center, but no pool. Swimming is a great form of exercise and relaxation and most of the other community center and areas in Vancouver have it. Would be wonderful if part of the park was reserve for that. Thank for the opportunity to comment and give suggestions.

Thank you for getting in touch. The size of this proposed park is quite compact (37m x 25m) and unfortunately could not fit a swimming pool upon it.
The Park Board has recently started the VanSplash strategy which lays out an ambitious 25-year vision for the future of aquatics through a city-wide planning approach.

Will there be, at least, a water fountain? The park at Fraser & E. 8th Ave. was renovated some years back, without a water fountain for the kids. Very disappointing.

Thank you for the idea. During the next phase of design development, following this public engagement, we can look at incorporating a water fountain into the space and see whether it will work within the limitations of the park.

Will there be an accessible public washroom in this space? The lack of public toilets in the city is deplorable!

The VanPlay (2019) report highlighted the cities need for more washrooms within our park spaces and the Park Board is in the process of developing a city wide Washroom Strategy, in partnership with the City of Vancouver, looking to improve our cities facilities.
For Main & 7th Park, there are existing accessible public washrooms within the Mount Pleasant Community Centre and Library just across Main St. These washrooms are open every day and regularly serviced.
