The Vancouver Park Board is beginning the implementation for the calisthenics equipment that was voted on by the West End community in spring 2020 as part of the WEChoo$e participatory budgeting pilot project. We are now collecting feedback from the local community about the proposed location and type of equipment. Please check the project timeline to follow along on the process.

The survey is now closed. Please refer to the progress updates tab for additional information.

Background information

In February, 2020 the WE Choo$e Impact Team and City of Vancouver staff announced the results of the City’s first-ever participatory budgeting community vote. The ‘West End Calisthenics Park’, to be located in Barclay Square Park, was one of fourteen (14) potential projects identified through this process and received the highest number of community votes and a grant of $50,000 towards implementation.

Outdoor fitness equipment can provide both physical and social benefits by facilitating interactions and community building between neighbors who may not regularly have an opportunity to interact with one another. The public nature of outdoor fitness equipment also means that it is available to everyone in the community regardless of their financial situation.

Proposed location of calisthenics park

The proposed location for the calisthenics equipment (shown in blue) was selected for the following reasons:

  • Access to an existing accessible trail
  • The existing trees and tree roots will not be damaged
  • The existing play equipment and bench will not need to be moved

The proposed location will support a main piece of calisthenics equipment with a variety of features on it. (see below for an image and description). The proposed location can also accommodate an additional piece of fitness equipment that is universally accessible for all ages and abilities.

Equipment included:

  • incline bench
  • parallel bars
  • push up bar
  • decline press
