The City of Vancouver and Vancouver Park Board have received a proposal from TransLink to upgrade Burrard Skytrain Station, which includes changes to the station entry and a portion of Art Phillips Park along Burrard Street. The new design is intended to support downtown open space needs, create connection to passive open space on the west side of the station, and enhance accessibility while addressing the needs of transit users.
As part of the station upgrade, the existing station entry on Burrard Street will be relocated and expanded to increase capacity. The street level stairs and escalators will be moved closer to Dunsmuir Street, while the public open space will be moved closer to Melville Street. The station expansion will require the removal of some trees, which will be replaced elsewhere on-site, to be determined through the review process.
While TransLink is collaborating with City and Park Board staff to further develop details on the project, the public space upgrades will include:
Improving site accessibility by replacing steps with accessible ramps and sloped walkways
Increasing seating to support park and Transit users
Creating open space to support onsite programming
Enhancing the cherry tree walkway along the south edge of the park
Under the subject site existing DD zone the proposal is “conditional”, which means it could be permitted. However, it must be reviewed by the Director of Planning and Park Board for consideration and approval.
In response to COVID-19 (Coronavirus), we held an extended online question and answer (Q&A) period in place of an in-person open house for this project.
